Join us as we choose our top five family-friendly things to do in Cornwall this May half term.
No trip to Cornwall can be without a trip to the beach. Whether it's digging sand castles and scouring the rockpools for marine life or venturing out on the water for a surf, SUP or kayak, Cornwall’s crystal clear waters are warming up in May and are fun for all the family. Nearby Trebarwith Strand is popular with families, revealing a long stretch of sand at low tide, or travel a little further afield for surfing at Polzeath or Daymer Bay. Wavehunters have a wide range of equipment for hire from bodyboards to hard boards and offer lessons for both beginners and improvers.
During May, spring is in full bloom in Cornwall and so there’s no better time to experience one of its magical gardens. Perhaps the most famous of which are the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Both are a drive away, but well worth a day trip. Heligan will be holding a Wild Week during the May half term, where visitors are invited to rediscover the wild, its importance, its beauty, and our place within it. Eden will be holding its Festival of Imagination throughout the half term week packed with music, art, literature and interactive experiences.
Cornwall has a host of theme parks that will keep the children entertained all day. The biggest of which is Flambards in Helston, which has rides for all ages as well as indoor attractions. Closer to Tintagel is Camel Creek Adventure Park, near Wadebridge. With lots of exciting rides, animal encounters and indoor play, everyone will love a day out here. For rides of a gentler kind, Lappa Valley’s mini train rides, adventure playgrounds, boating lake and golf course offer a day of nostalgic fun on its 35-acre site.
Whether it’s indigenous species or animals from far-flung places, Newquay Zoo has it all. With feeding talks, jungle gems, a tropical house as well as a children’s play area, you’ll certainly need a trip to Café Lemur to refuel. For creatures from deep, Padstow’s National Lobster Hatchery makes for both an entertaining and informative visit where you can get up close with rarely seen lobster babies, pregnant lobster mamas, giant lobsters and other weird and wonderful coastal creatures.
